If you are a skipper, a bare boat charter will give you the freedom to make your own sailing plans. In most places in Greece you will enjoy cruising with steady winds, safe waters and sunshine, many coasts and places to visit - a bare boat yachting paradise.

What is typically required in order to bare boat charter, is evidence that the skipper has previous charter experience. Cruising a yacht generally needs at least a skipper and one competent crew member.

Usually the skipper will be asked to complete a form that proves his previews sailing experience. Certificates are useful but not mandatory. As soon as all useful papers and forms are completed, you can take your chartered yacht and begin your holiday.

The owner of the yacht you are chartering, will now show you everything you need to know about the boat. You should be as familiar with the vessel as possible before leaving the dock. Things you check with the yacht owner before you go are:

  • The location and safe operation of all the safety equipment including, fire extinguisher, life jackets and first aid kit

  • The safe operation of the cooking and refrigeration systems

  • Engine operation and regular checks

  • Operation of the VHF system including mayday instructions

  • The location and operation of all the instruments, including the GPS when applicable

  • The location of all charts and pilot books

  • The location and operation of all winches, reefing lines and other sail controls

  • The anchoring system

  • Any other systems peculiar to that vessel or not covered above

It is important not to rush the yacht orientation and don't be afraid to ask questions! If there is anything you are not sure of or want to know more about, just ask it again. It is essential to have understood how everything works.
If you are not familiar with the cruising area, we can provide you with a full chart briefing which takes about one hour.

Generally, bare boat charters in Greece require more experienced skippers than beginners. The areas of Cyclades islands and southern Aegean are more demanding in sailing skills because of the Meltemi winds, that can reach 5 to 7 Bft during the day and last for a long time. Argosaronic Gulf, the Ionian islands, Sporades and Halkidiki are more safe waters during summer for less experienced skippers.
